General Proxy Statistics ~ terms explained
VISITS
This figure can not be used to accurately gauge computer use and should be ignored.
It is suppose to represent the total number of separate internet sessions customers have had on all APN computers and WiFi Hotspots at your District/City libraries for the month.  One visit equals customer using web browser eg Internet Explorer or Firefox, to view web site(s) then closing web browser.  Or one visit equals computer left idle for 15 minutes after customer has been viewing web sites.  The busier the library, however, the lower the visits total because there is less likely to be idle time between customers.

UNIQUE USERS
This represents the number of APN public PCs (not users) located at your District/City libraries.  This number also includes any APN WiFi Hotspots (one hotspot equals one user).

SITES VISITED
This represents the total number of unique web sites visited for the month on all APN public PCs (and WiFi Hotspots) at your District/City libraries.  So multiple users on computers accessing any web pages that begin with http://www.trademe.co.nz counts as one site visit for the month.  Many sites display, for example, advertising on their pages.  Viewing a NZ Herald news story which displays third party advertising down the right hand side will result in multiple site visits.

Hamilton City Libraries total site visits for September 2008 was 63,275.  That is customers at Hamilton City Libraries viewed 63,275 unique domains, up from August total of 52,705.  See Page Views for the total number of web pages viewed.

HITS
There can be several hits on each web page - some web sites may average between 8 or 10 hits per page.  To more accurately ascertain internet use see Sites Visited or Page Views.

KBYTES TRANSFERRED
Total internet traffic (downloads and uploads) at your District/City libraries for the month.  Includes all public APN PCs and WiFi Hotspots.
Hamilton City Libraries transferred 502,000,000 Kbytes kilobytes (approximately 500 gigabytes) of data during September 2008 up from 296,000,000 Kbytes from August 2008.

Watch out - the Average Per Day column displays some totals with decimal points - the average Kbytes transferred in Hamilton for Sep 2008 was 9,570,093.161 or approximately 9.5 gigabytes per day, not 9.5 terabytes!

PAGE VIEWS
The number of individual web pages accessed for the month - the following web pages represent three page views and one site visit.

Hamilton City Libraries APN public PCs and WiFi Hotspots viewed 3,595,533 pages in September 2008 up from 2,197,386 in August 2008.

Activity Summary - Day of the week
Do not use this report to ascertain the busiest day of the week.  Because the report runs over a calendar month in September 2008, for example, Monday and Tuesday totals need to be divided by five (that is there were five Monday and Tuesday in September 2008) and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday by four.
Visits column should be ignored as it does not accurately reflect the number of user session on APN public PCs.

Activity Summary - Activity by hour
As the report period is longer than one day, the value shown for a given hour includes the combined total during that hour for all days in the report period.  If a library is always open from eg 10 am to 12 noon seven days a week and open from 4 pm to 5 pm only five days per week then this will skew the results.  

Filtering
The Top 20 reports have filters applied to
- try and exclude: advertising websites, domain hosting and viral marketing sites (eg free clicks, smileys, cursor mania and "love calculator")
- to show just the main website, for example "www.bebo.com" appears in the reports but "images.bebo.com" is out
